With this app we provide inspiration and tips to those who want to practice with people with the neuromuscular disease spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). It is aimed at parents of children with SMA and people who have SMA themselves. But the supervisors of children with SMA will also benefit greatly from this. The app contains simple exercises that can be performed at home. We chose them based on function. The functional levels depend on the childs ability to sit with or without support and to walk independently (non-sitters, sitters and walkers). For some exercises, the child will need to understand instructions. It is then up to you to assess whether the exercise is feasible for the child. The app also contains tips to make the exercises easier or more difficult. We deliberately do not provide information about the number of times, how long or how often the exercises should be performed. The childs strength and endurance should be the determining and guiding factors here.Ideally, these exercises should be performed under the guidance of a professional experienced in the treatment of individuals with neuromuscular disorders. In several exercises, we recommend using toys to attract the childs attention and make the exercise more fun. Always make sure that the child eventually gets hold of his toy. It is important that it feels that its effort pays off. It is also important that the exercises are safe. Prevent the child from falling by staying close and ready to provide assistance if needed. And perhaps most importantly of all: make something fun of it!
